Brutally honest confession, I love beautiful house designs and looking at house photos in the Internet from sites like ArchDaily, Architizer, and Pinterest, who doesn’t?
My husband and I are on a mission, we are planning to remodel our house next year and we have been doing a lot of research for house renovation ideas. It was partly inspired by the TV programmes from HGTV; Property Brothers, House Hunters Asia, House Hunters Renovations, and Fixer Upper.
Before we come to that, we were actually looking at purchasing another property for this re-modeling project, scouring the next potential house for sale around Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Unfortunately, prices of house in KL has been sky-rocketing high in the past few years and so we may have to shift down our gears and perhaps looking at re-modeling our current house instead.
Then, we were looking for some inspirations from other house renovation projects in Malaysia and hence I decided to share the 10 houses that are quite impressive and beautifully built in Malaysia. If you have any other interesting projects, please do share with me!
House No. 1: Less is more – The 23 Terrace
Architect: DTLM
Location: Taman Tun Dr. Ismail (TTDI), Kuala Lumpur
Front Porch – source
Front Porch of the house: Looks like the best of its class among the neighbours but wait till you see the interior, you will be even more impressed.
Living Room – source
Living Room: Very open space. They revealed the bricks in the living room as their feature wall. Plaster ceiling is common in most of the houses in Malaysia and this house has choose to leave their ceiling with just bare concrete. It still looks great, giving a visual of high ceiling and bigger space. Plus, they have a Big Ass Fan too! (My hubby is fanatic about this and looks forward to have this in our new house!) Their fixtures are simple and nice, not too overly done. Everything looks good at it’s place.

House for sale!
Husband and I was driving to look for houses for sale in Taman Desa in Klang Valley and passed by to this same house! Coincidentally, we found the house design online too. It is now for sale for RM6.5 million. It is to expensive for us, we can’t afford. Any interested buyers?

House No. 3: The Terasek House

I believe that this is a 2 storey house that has been demolished and rebuilt to 3 storeys high. A very open plan concept, high ceilings, plenty of natural light with some industrial design feel.

House No. 5: The ‘Labyrinth’ House – Ittka House
Architect: Fabian Tan
Location: Kuala Lumpur
I call it the Labyrinth house because it resembles a maze house. It has an interesting layout where the kitchen, dining area, and living room are on the upper floor, quite unconventional in Malaysia. The house is designed with internal spaces that feel more like outdoor spaces. 2 of their bedrooms located on ground floor are furnished with 2 large sliding doors each room that can be opened up to a central courtyard-style space where a small tree is planted.

House No. 6: The Deck House
Architect: Choo Gim Wah Architect
Location: Janda Baik, Pahang
This is a pretty huge house located in Janda Baik, Pahang (close to Bukit Tinggi). It is surrounded by the nature. There is a number of people asking if this house is for rent as it looks like a luxury guest house. This house is not for rent, it is a private home. Have a look. 🙂
Its designed by Choo Gim Wah, from the comments in the source article someone mentioned that this is Jimmy Choo’s daugther, well done!

House No. 7: Contemporary Industrial (S11 House)
Architect: ArchiCentre
Location: Petaling Jaya, Kuala Lumpur
I personally think that this architect makes nice industrial houses. They turn this dilapidated old house to a green tropical house. It was designed to achieve the highest level Platinum rating of Malaysia’s Green Building Index (GBI). They retain existing all big old trees which sided at the site. Much of the demolished old house materials were re-used, like old clay bricks, old roof tiles, old roofing timbers.

Tropical-themed bungalow nestled in the upper scale Bukit Damansara in KL. This house is built with trees around the house and plants hanging down the walls to create a cooling effect and it is environmentally friendly.

House No. 9: Clay Roof House
Architect: DTLM
Location: Petaling Jaya, Selangor
This was a dilapidated old house. They discovered that this old house has good quality Indian clay roof tiles, hence the architect decided to apply it as a façade screen to reduce the morning and afternoon sun. The roof tiles were carefully removed, stored and reused. Vertical steel rods were designed to hold the clay tiles whilst allowing free movement to swivel and turn. Brilliant idea, isn’t it?

House No. 10: Concrete House
Architect: Eleena Jamil
Location: Sepang, Selangor
The external of this house looks unfinished at one glance but if you look closely, this houses’ external design beat the odds of many conventional houses out there. Every single detail and effort that was applied made this a masterpiece that will surely make heads turn.

Hi Elaine. I liked your article very much. I was much attracted to the two-storey house turned into a three-strorey house. I was trying to look for the people that you mentioned, JTJ Design but could not locate them on the internet.
Could you please forward to me their contact details so that I can talk to them about modifying my house?
Thanks a lot.
